The purpose of the present invention is to correct the gradation characteristics of an input image signal appropriate for the use of a display device. This image processing device comprises: a first gradation converting unit 102 for converting the gradation of an input image signal; a sharpening unit 110 for sharpening the image signal having the gradation converted by the first gradation converting unit; a second gradation converting unit 132 for converting the gradation of the image signal after being sharpened; and a display control unit 138 for displaying on the display device the image represented by the image signal after the gradation is converted by the second gradation converting unit. The sharpening unit includes: a luminance calculation unit for calculating the luminance of each pixel in the plurality of pixels in the image represented by the image signal; a difference calculation unit for calculatingthe difference between the luminance for each of the plurality of pixels and the luminance resulting from applying a sharpening filter 111 to the luminance; and a luminance modification unit for modifying the luminance of each of the plurality of pixels on the basis of the difference calculated by the difference calculation unit.
