[Class 72] In an apparatus for the separation of mixed. materials of the kind in which individual pieces of the mixture are passed in sequence past an electrical contacting device and then to a diverting mechanism comprising doors or flaps which are operated automatically, in accordance with the effect of the resistance or conductance of each piece upon an electrical circuit connected with the contact device, to determine the subsequent paths of the individual pieces, the diverting mechanism comprises a member which is moved bodily along fixed guides with a translatory edgewise movement into or out of the path of each piece in accordance with the effect of the piece upon the electrical circuit when passing the contact device. The door 1 is carried in guides fixed to transverse members 12 fixed to the side frames of the machine and is hinged at 3 to a frame 2 which is adjustably attached to one end of a lever 4 by a pin 5. The lever 4 is attached to the frame 6 of the machine by a fulcrum 7 and is rocked about the latter by a thimble 9 and pin 10 attached to the spindle 8 of a solenoid. The position of the plate 1 is such that the trajectory of the individual pieces leaving the belt 14 after contacting with the contact device 16 is such that they will pass over the plate and alight in a shoot 15 or will strike the plate then in an elevated position and drop down on a shoot 18. Instead of flat plates, the latter may be curved and may run in curved guides, and then are attached bv four rods from the corners to a spindle connected to a bell-crank lever. The solenoid operating mechanism may also be arranged below the shoot 15. The plates may be made with strengthening webs at the back and front, may be drilled to lighten them and may be made of suitable light alloys. The apparatus may be used for the separation of coal from shale, or for the treatment of mixtures of, e.g. iron oxide and siliceous material with clays. Specification 421,401 is referred to. |
