[Class 39 (i)] A high-pressure mercury-vapour discharge tube 1 which is made of quartz and provided with thermionic electrodes 7, 8, is operated at a vapour pressure in excess of 5 atmospheres, but if possible less than 10 atmospheres, and with a current load of over 0À5 amperes which is introduced through sealed-in leads 9, 10 of metal foil less than 0À02 mm. in thickness. The filling consists of rare gas together with a small quantity of mercury which becomes completely vaporized during operation. The thermionic electrodes 7, 8 may consist of tungsten wire wound around a thicker tungsten wire and provided in known manner with a coating of alkaline earth oxide, the outer ends of the thick tungsten wires being laid in a fold in the metal foils. To avoid condensation of the mercury in the pole chambers 5, 6 the walls 12 of the latter are made thicker than the wall 11 of the discharge chamber 2. Flanges 3, 4 are provided to screen the discharge chamber from the pole chambers 5, 6. The electrodes may be heated by separate heaters to which current is led through separate metal foil seals.
