A method for controlling a vehicle which includes an engine and a clutch. The method comprises identifying a pull-away phase of the vehicle; monitoring a torque demand parameter; setting an engine output torque limit parameter indicating the output torque that the engine must not exceed during the pull-away phase; and controlling the engine in dependence on the torque demand parameter and the engine output torque limit parameter. The torque demand parameter may be determined based on a driver-determined torque demand, for example as set by the accelerator pedal position. Therefore a higher torque limit may be set where the accelerator pedal is pressed more firmly, such as when the vehicle is needed to pull away under load or up a steep incline. The pull-away phase of the vehicle may be determined by monitoring for when the clutch is disengaged and/or when the vehicle speed is below a threshold. |
