A system for monitoring the orientation and position of components in an oil well. The system includes a first well component, a second well component, and a transducer 72 attached to the first well component, for generating a pulse P. The system also includes a transceiver 76 attached to the second well component for measuring the parameters of the pulse P generated by the transducer 72, and a processor 80 in communication with the transceiver 76 that receives information about the parameters of the pulse as measured by the transceiver 76, and that calculates the position of the transceiver 76 relative to the transducer 72. In an alternative embodiment, a well head member with a sensor (48, 50, Figure 1) and a hanger with a sensor (36, 38, Figure 1) is provided. The hanger is inserted into the well head member and the well head senor (48, 50, Figure 1) and hanger sensor (36, 38, Figure 1) emit a signal when positioned a predetermined distance from one another, indicating the hanger is properly positioned in the well head. A receiver for receiving a signal, is in communication with one or both of the sensors. |
