p An apparatus for applying adhesive to the closing flaps of paper and like flat bags, envelopes and the like, which are conveyed past the apparatus in a circular path, comprises a reservoir 4 for the adhesive, and an inclined rotatable applying disc 2 which dips in the adhesive at its lower part while its upper part projects through a slot 5 in the wall of the reservoir. Wipers or scrapers 6, 7 are arranged within the reservoir, above and below the disc 2, and the slot 5 is made deeper at the part through which the disc returns to the reservoir, to prevent any remaining adhesive from being wiped off on the outer wall of the reservoir. A slotted scraper 8, through which the disc 2 passes, may be arranged on the front wall of the reservoir and overlapping the slot 5, and may be finely adjusted sideways, as by an eccentric 9, to regulate the amount of adhesive delivered by the disc. The disc 2, the member which conveys the flat bags 12 in a circular path past the disc, and a grooved horizontally rotating abutment disc 13, are driven from a common driving shaft, to ensure a rolling contact between the disc and the closing flaps of the bags.
