The invention relates to configuring a medium access mechanism for a group of nodes among nodes using a random medium access mechanism with collision avoidance (e.g. Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Avoidance, CSMA-CA) based on a back-off computation in order to contend for accessing the medium and implementing a peer to peer discovery protocol, the method comprising for a first node of the group: receiving a first discovery message to establish a direct peer to peer communication over the network 500; generating at least one deterministic back-off parameter; sending the generated back-off parameter to the nodes of the group using a second discovery message 510; and the method further comprising for nodes of the group: setting up a deterministic back-off access mechanism for the group of nodes using said at least one back-off parameter 520. These features allow to easily configure the group of peer nodes with a deterministic back-off access mechanism while configuring a direct peer to peer communication. Also disclosed is a method of contending for access to a communication medium shared between communication nodes, comprising: upon detecting a trigger event, activating a random access mechanism based on a deterministic back-off computation. |
