Improvements in apparatus for the liquid treatment of fine filamentous thread in annular package form

Relates to apparatus for the liquid treatment of fine filamentous thread in annular package form, such as rayon cakes, in which the direction of flow of the liquid through the packages is reversible. A treatment tank 3, in which packages 6 are supported in tiers by skeleton supports 10 and annular rubber spacers 32, is supported in a readily removable manner on a fixed base 2. Thus, a tank loaded with packages can be removed from one base to another for various treatments. The tank has a bottom 32 formed with a series of ports 43 communicating with the interior 41 of the package tiers and another series of ports 45 communicating with the tank space 42 around the tiers. It has also a removable cover 31, an overflow 13, and rubber base members 31 on which the package tiers are pressed by rubber caps 33 and spiders 37. All parts of the apparatus are formed of non-corrosive material or are coated with rubber. The supports 10, Fig. 13, consist of split rings 111 connected by rubber-covered rods 112. The fixed base 2 comprises an upper casing 61 and a lower casing 461. The upper casing 61 is divided, by transverse partitions and two series of inclined plates 47, 48, into two series of alternating transverse chambers. The lower casing is divided by a partition 104 into two longitudinal chambers 53, 62. The transverse chambers defined by the plates 47 communicate at their upper ends with the ports 43 and at their lower ends with the chamber 53, while those defined by the plates 48 communicate with the ports 45 and chamber 62. In operation, liquid is passed alternately from the chamber 53, outwardly through the package 6, and back to the chamber 62, and from the chamber 62, inwardly through the packages 6, and back to the chamber 53, such reversing liquid flow causing a pulsation and a periodic deformation of the packages on the supports 10. The chambers 53 and 62 are respectively connected by pipes 58, 641 and 63, 631, Fig. 1, to a four-way valve 68 which also is connected by a pipe 69 to a pump 8 and by a pipe 74 and filter 72 to a pipe 66. The latter is connected, as is the pipe 641, to a source of treatment liquid and also is connected to the pump 8. By appropriate setting of control cocks 65, 67, 73 and of the valve 68, the tank 3 can first be filled with liquid from a suitable source, and the liquid can then be circulated by the pump 8. The valve 68 may be controlled by hand or automatically to reverse the direction of circulation.
