[Class 55 (ii)] Air is cleaned, e.g. from paint particles, by treating it in a narrow circuitous passage 6, with a liquid spray projected through a slot 18 therein, forcing additional air into the passage through a slot 17, and then passing the air into an expansion chamber 7 with baffles 10 to remove excess liquid. The passage 6 into which the air is drawn by a fan 12 has a slot 18 dipping into water in a reservoir 3, and air under greater pressure forced by the fan 12 through a duct 16 or by a separate fan 40 into the reservoir 3 passes through slots 17, 18 into the air to be treated, water being entrained at 18. The direction of air flow is reversed in the passage 6. Water removed by the zigzag baffles 10 above the expansion chamber 7 collects in a trough 8 and is led by a pipe 9 into a compartment 21 of a tank 20, whence it passes in turn through submerged openings 26-28 in partition walls 25 to compartments 22-24 respectively, where solid impurities float or form sediment. Fresh water is supplied by a pipe 30, and the level in the tank 20 is the same as that of the reservoir 3, to which water is returned through an opening 5. A water wheel 42 in the slot 18 rotated by a motor 44 may add to the mixing effect of air and water in the shallow passage 6. The treated air passes from the fan 12 to exhaust, preferably about 20 per cent being returned through the duct 16 to the reservoir. A softening agent may be added to the water.
