<PICT:0495807/IV/1> Artificial filaments, foils, and the like are stretched during their travel from one point to another with the aid of hot water which is at a temperature above its boiling point at atmospheric pressure and which is contained in a closed vessel and maintained under a pressure greater than that corresponding to its vapour pressure at the said temperature by means of air or other gas in the vessel. Suitable apparatus comprises a vessel 3 for gaseous medium under superatmospheric pressure, having an inlet 4 for gaseous medium, a container 13 for hot water, a feed device 15 for supplying hot water, and means for passing the materials through the water and stretching them therein. Means may be provided for cooling the materials before and after their contact with the hot water. In an example, cellulose acetate yarn is stretched to 10 times its original length in water at a temperature of 135 DEG C. and under a total pressure due to the steam and air of 40 lb. per square inch. Specifications 438,586, 438,587, 443,707, and 443,773 are referred to.
