The internal combustion engine (1) has a circuit having a connection line (13) through which water is passed to a waste heat usage system (3). An evaporator exhaust gas heat exchanger (16) and an exhaust gas recirculation evaporator heat exchanger (17) are provided for heating and/or evaporation of water with exhaust gas. Evaporated water is liquefied by a capacitor (19). Water is collected at a water collecting and compensating tank (21). Water is passed from capacitor to evaporator exhaust gas recirculation heat exchanger and to evaporator exhaust gas heat exchanger.
