The present invention discloses a method of controlling mango pulp weevil that attacks Philippine super mango, and demonstrated for the first time the radiation tolerance in Sternochetus Frigidus, the subject insect pest. Various doses (i.e. 25,50,75,100,150,300 and 400 Gy were found effective, which decreased the number of eggs laid by adult females when the doses are increased. Significant differances were observed in adult longevity among treatment doses in S. frigidus, but none between sexes and in the interaction between dose and sex. Also, based on dose-response tests with different life stages, the adult was determined to be the most tolerant life stage and 100 Gy (measured doses 93.4-114.4 Gy) appeared to be sufficient to prevent reproduction in adult weevils. Hence, the above radiation doses are sufficient are sufficient to provide quarantine security against mango pulp weevil. |
