A process for producing an aqueous chlorous acid solution, comprising the steps of: adding to a chlorous acid-containing solution at least one compound selected from the group consisting of inorganic and organic acids and salts or a combination thereof, to provide long-term stabilization of said chlorous acid for delaying the conversion of chlorous acid to chlorine dioxide and produce the aqueous chlorous acid solution in a form that is capable of sustaining chlorous acid for an extended time, wherein the pH of the aqueous chlorous acid solution is in the range of 3.2 to 8.0.
