[Class 98 (ii)] A photographic developer comprises a heterocyclic compound wherein an amino group attached to a benzene ring, together with the nuclear carbon atom of the latter to which it is attached and a nuclear carbon atom immediately adjacent thereto, forms part of a hydrogenated ring and stands in para or ortho position to a second amino-group attached to the benzene ring. Compounds specified are tetrahydroquinoxaline, 5-amino-dihydro- 2-methylindole, 6-amino-1 : 2 : 3 : 4-tetrahydroquinoline, 6-amino-1 2 : 3 : 4-tetrahydroquinaldine, and 6-aminobenzthiazoline. Substitution products may be used, and in particular the methylene group or groups concerned in the ring formation may carry substituents imparting solubility in water. The compounds may be used for fine-grain development, and may be used in mixture with each other or known developing compounds. The compounds may also be used for colour development and colour formers suitable for use therewith are 1-phenyl-3-methyl-5-pyrazolone, 1-hydroxy-2-naphthoic acid, phenylisoxazolone and the benzovlacetic acid chloranilides. The colour formers may be in the developing solution or in the emulsion layer. The development of multilayer material containing colour formers is referred to. The compounds may be used in ordinary and colour reversal development. |
