508,868. Variable condensers. HAWKE, K. N., and BRITISH MECHANICAL PRODUCTIONS, Ltd. Jan. 11, 1938, No. 926. [Class 37] Two rigid carrier members 1, 2 having parts of their adjacent surfaces coated with metal are separated by a thin layer of insulator such as mica, and a single bolt acting as pivot for the rotation of one member, have this bolt as connecting means for one of the metal coatings. In the example, the bolt 4 is secured to the upper, rotating, ceramic member by a nut 7 and a flange 6 which bears against the metal layer on the under side. At its lower extremity the bolt has a groove into which engages a spring spider 5 bearing an extension arm 14 which acts as lead. The metal coating on the lower, fixed, ceramic carrier is connected to a lead 1] through a rivet 12. The metal coatings may be deposited on the carriers by burning on or by painting, sputtering or electrolysis or may be constituted by thin metal plates recessed into the carrier. The thin dielectric layer may be formed. by anodic oxidation on, e.g. aluminium metal layers.
