[Class 69 (ii)] [Also in Group XXIV] Variable speed ratio power transmission comprising in combination a hydrodynamic torque converter, a clutch and a mechanical overdrive gearing adapted to be used in conjunction with the hydrodynamic torque converter to produce a ratio intermediate of the ratio obtained by drive through the hydrodynamic torque converter only and the ratio obtained by direct drive through the clutch only, is provided with means for indicating optically or acoustically the altering of that critical speed ratio at which it is desirable to bring the overdrive gearing into operation. A transmission for a motor vehicle comprises, Fig. 1, a converter 1 and coupling 2, the impellers 5, 6 of which are driven by the input shaft 4, and the turbines 7, 8 of which drive a shaft 9 which drives an output shaft 16 through mechanical change speed gearing 3 yielding a direct drive and an overdrive. The hydraulic coupling may be replaced by a mechanical clutch. The shaft 4 drives, through flexible shafting 18b, the sun wheel 18d of an epicyclic gear; the shaft 9 drives, through flexible shafting 18c, the annulus 18a, 19 of the epicyclic; the spider 20 carrying the planet pinions drives a shaft 20a, whereby a disc 21 takes up an angular position dependent on the difference in speed of the shafts 4, 9. The shaft 4 also drives a shaft 21a whereby a hand 22 takes up an angular position dependent on the speed of the shaft 4. With suitable adjustment. members 23, 23 on the disc 21 and hand 22 respectively will always coincide whenever the critical ratio is reached, although the angular position at which coincidence takes place may vary according to operating conditions. The members 23, 23 may be contacts so that at coincidence circuits are completed to light a lamp or actuate a sound-signal; additionally the gear changing may be effected automatically at coincidence of the contacts. The epicyclic gearing may be replaced by hydraulic differential gear. Specifications 489,396 and 503,319 are referred to.
