A nickel-based superalloy consists of (by weight): 14.6-15.9 % cobalt, 11.5-13.0 % chromium; 0.8-1.2 % iron, 0.20-0.60 % manganese, 2.00-2.40 % molybdenum, 3.30-3.70 % tungsten, 2.90-3.30 % aluminium, 2.60-3.10 % titanium, 3.50-5.10 % tantalum, 1.20-1.80 % niobium, 0.10-0.60% silicon, 0.02-0.06 % carbon, 0.010-0.030 % boron, 0.05-0.11 % zirconium and 0-0.045 % hafnium, with the balance being nickel and impurities. The alloy comprises a disordered fcc gamma phase which is precipitation strengthened by an ordered L12 gamma prime phase and can be used to make components of gas turbine engines by hot isostatic pressing or hot compacting powder, followed by extruding or hot working to form a billet which is then cut and forged. The forged part is then solution heat treated above its gamma prime solvus temperature, quenched to room temperature using forced or fan air cooling, stress relieved for 1-4 hours at a temperature in the range 870-950 0C, aged for 1-8 hours at a temperature in the range 830-870 0C, aged for 1-8 hours at a temperature in the range 800-830 0C and air cooled. |
