The present invention generally relates to a method and device for encoding an image. The method comprises:
- calculating (13) from the image a residual image with an output dynamic range;

wherein clipping (18) a pixel of the residual image comprises:
- determining (51) the pixel in the input dynamic range space corresponding to the pixel to clip,
- obtaining the clipped pixel by projecting (52) the corresponding pixel in the input dynamic range space by preserving the hue,
the clipped pixel in the output dynamic range space is then the pixel corresponding (53) to the projected pixel in the input dynamic range space.
