[Class 79 (v)] [Also in Group XXIV] In steering-gear for vehicles and aircraft of the kind in which the steering hand-wheel is axially adjustable on the steering shaft, either the wheel or the shaft having a tubular portion slidable on the shaft or the wheel, the tubular portion 12, Fig. 1, is contractible radially for a part or the whole of its length and an axially-displaceable locking member 16 has an abutment surface 17 adapted to engage a corresponding surface 13 on the tubular portion to contract said portion into clamping engagement with the part or shaft 18. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, the wheel hub 11 has a tubular portion 12, 13 splined to slide on the steering shaft 18 and split at 14 so as to be contractible on the shaft. The locking member comprises a nut 16 which screws on the part 12 and has an internally-coned surface 17 adapted to engage the corresponding surface 13 and clamps the part 12 on to the shaft 18. A spring ring 18a on the shaft 18 prevents accidental withdrawal of the wheel hub 11 from the shaft. A tubular shroud or spring 32 covers the shaft 18. In the construction shown in Fig. 3, the steering shaft 21 has a tubular part 19 secured thereto by a pin 20, and the wheel hub 29 has a short splined shaft 28 sliding in the part 19. The upper end of the part 19 is slotted at 24 and coned at 23, and is clamped on the hub shaft 28 by a nut 25 having a conical surface 27 corresponding to the surface 23. Movement of the hub shaft 28 on the part 19 is limited by a pin 31 engaging a groove 30 in the shaft. A volute spring or shroud 32 covers the shaft 28.
