[Class 122 (i)] The composite head of a piston comprises a protective plate of heat-resisting steel which is secured to a hollow cast-iron member which carries the piston rings, and has a metal core of high-heat conductivity lying within the cast-iron member. The protective plate 11 is connected to the ribbed head 12a of the castiron member 12 and to the metal core 15 by the screwed stud 16 which prevents axial movement. The nut 18 bears against a cast-iron washer 19 set in the core. The plate and the core are spigoted at 11a and 15a and abut in a bore in the centre of the part 12a. Screwed studs 21 also secure the plate to the cast-iron head the securing nuts being housed in recesses in the metal core. A ring 10, retained in position by the plate 11 completes the groove for the top ring 14 whilst the part 13 carries the remaining rings. The plate 11 is somewhat smaller in diameter than the ring 10 and the metal core 15 is smaller than the skirt portion 13. The ribs 25 may be on plate 11 or member 12a or both and are circular. The head 12a and the core 15 are secured to the lower part 26 of the piston by means of bolts 22, the heads of which are in recesses in cast-iron member 12a. |
