The present invention relates to bacterial strains of the species M. smegmatis with inactivated 3-ketosteroid-9±-hydroxylase activity or with 3-ketosteroid-9±-hydroxylase and 3-ketosteroid-”1-dehydrogenase activities, and uses of said strains for obtaining substantially pure AD or ADD, and for obtaining steroids from same.
