The present invention relates to a process for producing modified porous polyolefin membranes comprising the process steps of contacting a porous polyolefin membrane (A) with at least one organoborane-donor complex (B1), contacting the treated membrane with molecular oxygen (O 2 ), followed by contacting the treated membrane with an aqueous solution (C) comprising at least one monomer (C1) containing at least one carbon-carbon double bond, and at least one decomplexing agent (C2). The present invention further relates to said modified porous polyolefin membranes obtainable or obtained by the process of the invention and to electrochemical cells comprising said modified porous polyolefin membranes.
