A process for the separation of a gas from a gas stream using metal organic framework that is reversibly switchable between a first conformation that allows the first gas species to be captured in the metal organic framework, and a second conformation that allows the release of the captured first gas species, using light as the switching stimulus. The metal organic framework may comprise a metal and one or more ligands, in which the ligands contain an isomerizable group within the molecular chain that forms a link between adjacent metal atoms in the metal organic framework. |

A process for the separation of a first gas species from a gas stream using a gas separation material comprising a metal organic framework that is reversibly switchable between a first conformation that allows the first gas species to be captured in the metal organic framework, and a second conformation that allows the release of the captured first gas species on the use of light as the switching stimulus, the metal organic framework comprising at least one ligand containing an isomerisable group within the molecular chain that forms a link between adjacent metal atoms in the metal organic framework, and the process comprising:
contacting a gas stream containing the first gas species with the gas separation material comprising the metal organic framework in the first conformation to capture the first gas species, releasing the separated first gas species from the gas separation material by switching the conformation of the metal organic framework to the second conformation, and switching the metal organic framework to the first conformation to regenerate the gas separation material. |
