[Class 52 (ii)] Adjusting means for a chair back 43 pivoted to a supporting frame 16 at 38 comprise crossing slots 48, 50 on the frame 16 and chair back respectively, and a clamping bolt 51 passing through the intersection of the slots so that pivoting of the back causes a scissors action of the slots on the bolt, the angle between the slots remaining approximately constant at a value such that the bolt when slackened may be moved in the slots under the scissors action by pressure on the chair back at any setting in its range of angular adjustment. The slots 48 on the frame 16 are curved and the slots 50 are straight and are provided in the sides 36 of a yoke member 37 on which the back 43 is vertically adjustable by a bolt 44 taking in a slot 45. The bolt 51 has a head 52 engaging one of the sides 36 and a squared portion 53 engaging one of the slots 50 to prevent rotation. A spanning sleeve 54 is threaded on the bolt between the sides of the frame member 16 and a further sleeve 55 is acted on by a nut 56 to clamp the parts together. The seat 10 is fixedly secured by spider arms 11 to side portions 13 of a bearing post 12, and the tiltableframe 16 carrying the back 43 is pivoted to the post 12 at 18 and provided with stops 20, 21 coacting with rivet heads 14 to limit the tilting movement. A spring 31 bears at one end upon a forwardly projecting part 29 of the post 12 and at the other end upon a nut 35 on a bolt 27 having knife edges 25 engaging V-shaped pockets 24 in a bent-up portion at the upper part 15 of the frame 16. The spring normally maintains the back supporting member in the non-tilted position and its tension may be adjusted by the nut 35. |
