[Class 2 (iii)] Concentrated extracts of fat-soluble vitamins, i.e. vitamins of the A, D and E groups and vitamin K, are prepared by treating solutions of the vitamin-containing material with finely divided materials which show a preferential adsorption of the vitamin. The vitamin can then be eluted from the adsorbate with suitable solvents. In the example, a solution of wheat germ oil in petrol or trichlorethylene is allowed to percolate through a column of aluminium oxide which is subsequently eluted with a mixture of methyl alcohol and ether to give a solution containing a large proportion of the original vitamin E. Other eluting liquids such as ethyl alcohol, diosian or acetone or mixtures of these can be used. |
