Class 38 (iii)] Series-connected motors 10, 11, driving respective axles of a vehicle are disconnected in the event of wheel slippage by the opening of contacts of a relay 18, having two opposing coils, one 19 connected in series with a coil 22 across the motor 10, and the other 20 connected in series with a coil 24 across the motor 11. The coils 22, 24 are wound accumulatively on a core 23 which may have an air gap 26. If wheel slippage occurs, say on the axle driven by the motor 10, the voltage across the motor 10 increases and the energization of the coil 19 increases. The energization of the coil 22 also increases and this coil being inductively coupled to the other coil 24, the energization of the other relay coil 20 is .reduced or even reversed. Thus the contacts 18 open to disconnect the motors by de-energizing the contactor 27 and are latched until the controller 15 is moved to its off position. The coils 22, 24 may be tapped to adjust for any voltage inequality of the motors. |
