A liquid crystal display device according to the present invention has an upper layer electrode (11) and a lower layer electrode (12) on a first substrate (10), as well as a counter electrode (21) on a second substrate (20). The width L of a branch section (11b) of the upper layer electrode is greater than or equal to the width S of a slit (11a). (A) When the gray scale is the same in a first and a second vertical scan period and a pixel displays white in the second vertical scan period, the second vertical scan period includes a write period during which a first potential difference V1 that is 60% or less of a black display voltage V0 is supplied to the upper layer electrode (11) and the lower layer electrode (12). (B) When the gray scale is different in the first and second vertical scan periods and a pixel displays white in the second vertical scan period, the second vertical scan period includes a write period during which a second potential difference V2 that is greater than the first potential difference V1 is supplied to the upper layer electrode (11) and the lower layer electrode (12). In the write period of the former, an electric potential susbstantially equivalent to that of the counter electrode (21) is supplied to the upper layer electrode (11).
