The present invention relates to a method for producing a packaging unit which comprises a plurality of packaging articles that are stacked to form a stack of goods, and also to an apparatus which is suitable therefor and has a device for encasing the stack of goods comprising a holder for a film supply and means for pulling a predetermined length of film from the film supply for encasing the stack of goods. The present invention addresses the problem of specifying an apparatus and also a method which allow for the simple and cost-effective production of packaging units and make it possible to identify manipulations on the packaging unit with a high degree of reliability. To solve this problem, the present invention proposes an apparatus having a random generator for generating and storing a random pattern and a device which applies this pattern as a mark to the film. The method differs from the generic prior art in that a random generator is used to generate data for producing a mark which are forwarded to a device which produces the mark and are stored for later comparison of the mark.
