What is specified is a method for operating an implement (10) - "Iron Roughneck" - and an implement (10) which operates according to the method, in which after an initial positioning of a tongs system (18) by means of a positioning device (20) and a subsequent fixing of the tongs system (18) to drill string elements (14, 16) to be connected by means of the tongs system (18), a resulting position - "actual position" - of the tongs system (18) is detected, then the tongs system (18) is oriented by means of a renewed movement of the positioning device (20) until a desired position of the tongs system (18) has been reached, and finally a resulting position of the positioning device (20) is stored as a future desired position for further movement cycles of the implement (10).
