A light source (400), having a quasi-incoherent broadband pump source configured to produce a longitudinally and transversally multi-mode pump beam (235) is disclosed. The light source may include a means (220) for narrowing the linewidth of the pump beam. An optical parametric oscillator with an optical cavity (351,352) contains a first crystal (370) configured to receive light from the pump source and produce a first output light beam and a second output light beam. A second crystal (470) in the cavity is configured to receive the first output light beam and the second output light beam and produce a third output light beam (465) having a frequency twice the first or second output light beam.
