[Class 7 (ii)] [Also in Groups XXIX and XXXV] An internal combustion engine combined with apparatus as claimed in the parent Specification is provided with at least two supercharging compressors, the operation of one of the compressors being independent of the control apparatus tending to maintain the supercharging pressure constant in spite of variations of barometric pressure while the operation of another is under the control of such apparatus. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1 two compressors 2, 3 are provided, the compressor 2 being driven by the engine through gearing 4 and communicating with the intake of the compressor 3 through a pipe 8 fitted with radiating fins. The compressor 3 is driven by an exhaust gas turbine. In a modification both compressors are driven by gas turbines arranged in tandem. In another arrangement one compressor is driven by a gas turbine while the other is driven by an electric motor. |
