Lateral fluorinated reactive mesogens (RMs) comprising a tolane group: wherein P is a polymerisable group, such as acrylate; Sp is a spacer group or single bond; r2 and r3 are 0-4 provided r2+r3≥1; R11 is straight chain or branched alkyl, alkoxy, thioalkyl, alkylcarbonyl, alkoxycarbonyl, alkylcarbonyloxy or alkoxycarbonyloxy with 1-15 C atoms which is optionally fluorinated; A and B are an aromatic or alicyclic group, which optionally contains one or more heteroatoms selected from N, O and S, and is optionally substituted by L; L is F or other substituents; preferred Z11 and Z12 include -COO- or -C≡C- and a single bond; n is 1-4; and m is 0-4. These compounds, their mixtures, polymers and formulations comprising these RMs and RM mixtures may be useful in optical or electro-optical components or devices, such as optical films for liquid crystal displays (LCDs). |
