[Class 72] In the manufacture of iron and steel by treating a molten bath with a basic slag, the basic component of the slag is produced by calcining at a temperature of 2500-3000‹ F. a lime base and a fluxing agent selected from the group consisting of a manganese oxide, alumina, an oxygen bearing silicon containing substance, nickel oxide, chromic oxide, clay, silicates, blast furnace or open hearth slag, coal or coke ashes, small particles of lime being embedded in a matrix derived from the lime and the fluxing agent. The amount of the flux is only sufficient to flux a minor portion of the lime, and when manganese oxide is used, iron oxide may also be added.</p> |
