[Class 74 (ii)] A stocking with French heel and foot is made by knitting upon one straight-bar machine the blank shown in Fig. 1, running the end rows of the high heel parts 3, 4 and the initial rows of the foot sides 5, 6 on to two adjacent rows of transfer points, cutting the joint between the parts 3, 5 and 4, 6, moving the row of transfer points holding the initial row of the sides 5, 6 through 180 degrees, transferring the whole of the aligned stitches, Fig. 2, to a second straight-bar machine, and finally knitting heel parts 3a, 4a on to the high heel parts 3, 4. Additional rows 5a, 6a. may be knitted. on the foot sides 5, 6. After the heel parts have been linked to the foot sides, these rows may be removed by unroving. To avoid the linking operation, the foot sides 5, 6 may be held by non-knitting needles which co-operate with narrowing bar so that after each course of the heel parts 3a, 4a, the stitches held by the non-knitting needles are transferred outwards by one needle on to the needles of the heel group. The device for aligning the high heel and foot side stitches may comprise a device, Fig. 8, having two fixed parts 30, 30a with points for holding the high heel stitches, and pivoted parts 31, 31a for the foot sides. Knives 38, 38a are slidably mounted upon the device for cutting the joints between the parts 3, 5 and 4, 6. The needle bar of the machine, Fig. 5, to which the aligned stitches are transferred may have a central section containing needles 10a which do not knit but which permit stitches thereon to be transferred to the side or active needles. The usual needles may be used in the central section, but the pressing edge is set back opposite these needles. |
