The present invention relates to a vehicle control unit (20 fig. 1). The vehicle control unit comprises an input (26) for detecting a start demand and a driving condition. The vehicle control module also comprises a control module (28) arranged to control an engine start attribute according to a first profile 34 and a second profile 36. The vehicle control module also comprises a selection module (30) arranged to select between the first and second profiles based on detecting a predetermined driving condition, in response to detecting a start demand. The vehicle attribute may be an engine speed at engine start and may include inducing an engine speed overshoot 38 to induce an engine flare to mimic a sporty or aggressive engine sound. The two profiles may be a sport profile 34 and a refined profile 36 in which the engine overshoot and flare may be suppressed in the refined mode. |
