[Class 83 [Also in Group XXXVI] casting-machines; metal-pouring.-Accumulator plates consisting of an alloy carried by a grid or other support are made by enclosing the grids in moulds carried by a rotatable container holding the molten alloy, the moulds being in communication with the interior of the container through a number of openings which are opened and closed periodically. Fig. 2 shows a rotatable container 1 carrying a single mould 6. An alloy of lead and sodium is introduced into the container and is melted by gas or electric heating devices 2. The container is mounted on a shaft 4 and is provided internally with projections 3 for mixing the alloy as the container rotates. The alloy may be supplied continuously to the container through the shaft 4 which may also carry sliding contacts for the supply of current to the heaters 2. The mould comprises two hinged parts 6, 7 which may be locked together in the closed position by a lever mechanism 8. The part 6 is provided with a number of openings 9 as shown in Fig. 5, through which the alloy passes into the mould. The openings are closed periodically and at the same time holes formed in the alloy which has been cast in the grid enclosed in the mould by pins 11 carried by a plate 12 which is raised and lowered by rack and lever mechanism 15, 14. The latter is operated by a rotating arm 13. The container 1 and the mould may be filled with an inert gas under pressure which may be supplied through the shaft 4. The mould may be provided with grooves for the escape of gas during the casting operation. The temperature of the alloy in the container 1 may be higher than the melting point of the grid in the mould, fusion of the grid being prevented by the rapid removal of heat by the rotation of the container and by the provision of ribs and passages for cooling liquid in the mould, Figs. 7 and 6 show a grid before and after being filled with alloy. The spaces 16 may be smaller towards the top of the grid and may be provided with barbs or projections 18 to hold the alloy in place. Fig. 6 shows the holes 19 passing through the finished plate and formed by the pins 11.
