Provided is a card reader that takes a card formed in a substantially longitudinal shape into the short direction thereof and reads magnetic data, and Is capable of detecting when a card having magnetic data recorded thereon has been inserted m a state m which the front/rear orientation is correct. In the card reader which takes in a card (2) formed in a substantially longitudinal shape into the short direction thereof and reads the magnetic data recorded on a magnetic stripe (2a) on the card (2), a magnetic head (9) that comes in contact with the card (2) is arranged in a card insertion section (4). A straight magnetic gap (9a) is formed at the tip of the magnetic head (9) and magnetic data is recorded in the magnetic stripe (2a) so as to be arranged in the longitudinal direction of the card (2). If the direction (V) that the magnetic gap (9a) formed in a straight line is formed is the gap direction, the gap direction is inclined relative to a first direction (Y) orthogonal to the insertion direction of the card (2), when viewed from the thickness direction of the card (2) inserted from an insertion port (3). |
