A dental cleaning appliance such as an electric toothbrush with a nozzle 36 for delivering a series of bursts of working fluid to the teeth of a user includes a fluid delivery system which is moveable relative to a handle as the appliance is moved along the teeth of the user. A sensor 250 such as a Hall effect sensor mounted in the handle detects movement of a magnet 252 connected to a support 240 which moves with the nozzle 36 and provides an output which varies with movement relative to the handle. A control circuit detects movement of the nozzle 36 entering an interproximal gap and actuates the delivery of a series of bursts of working fluid , to dislodge matter therein, depending on the rate of change of output from the sensor. The fluid may be pumped from a refillable reservoir surrounding the stem into an accumulator which has a solenoid valve controlling the bursts fluid to the nozzle based upon the sensor output. |
