Provided is a braking device for steel material which is capable of improving processing performance on a production line. A plurality of braking units (31), which are capable of independently shifting to brake positions at which a braking force is imparted to a steel material (62) moving along the upper surface (18a) of a first guide member (18), are positioned at a distance from one another in the direction in which the steel material (62) moves. This device is configured so as to reduce the speed of the steel material (62) to a target speed by imparting the braking force to the section (62a) to be cut away from the steel material (62) moving along the upper surface (18a), by making contact with said section (62a) in order starting from the braking means (31) positioned on the upstream side in the direction in which the steel material (62) moves. |
