The present invention provides a control apparatus for an internal combustion engine and a control method therefor. The control apparatus according to the present invention includes a main control apparatus, a first sub control apparatus for controlling a compression ratio variable mechanism, and a second sub control apparatus for controlling a variable valve timing mechanism. The main control apparatus limits a target value of the compression ratio according to the valve timing. The first sub control apparatus that obtains a target value of the compression ratio from the main control apparatus further limits the target value of the compression ratio based on the valve timing to control the compression ratio variable mechanism. Accordingly, it is possible to suppress the interference between a piston and a valve even if a failure occurs in a memory device. |
