[Class 96] [Also in Group II] Waste paper &c. is defibred by being circulated repeatedly, as illustrated, by a disc 10 rotating in an opening in the floor of tank 1 and having vanes 14 &c. so that pulp is discharged, e.g. at 1,000 to 2,000 feet per minute from the disc over a gap 31 between the disc 10 and a plate 32, treated material being continuously withdrawn through an outlet 28. The vanes 14 which are tapered to prevent material lodging on them, project over the gap 31 to clear it continuously. Heavy trash passes down a chute 41 and through an opening 42, and lighter trash is removed from an annular region T with the aid of a trailing rope &c. about which the lighter trash coils ; a rope of such trash may continue to form and be continuously withdrawn after the original rope &c. has been entirely withdrawn. Circulation of pulp is also aided by supplementary vanes between the vanes 14 and the centre of the disc surface and by the shaped surface of concrete filling 4 in which may be embedded fixed vanes 5. In a modification the plate 32 is perforated and extends close to the edge of the disc 10 the perforations being cleared by a curved wiper secured to the disc 10.
