An ion guide comprises a first and second ion guide ion guide portions 17 & 18 forming first and second ion guiding paths respectively. In order to provide a controlled transfer of ions, a plurality of different first DC voltages are applied to the electrodes of the first ion guide portion 17 in order to generate an electric field that directs ions from the first ion guiding path into the second ion guiding path of the second ion guide portion 18. For example, a resistor chain electrically connected to the first electrodes between a first and second DC voltages DC1 & DC2 may be used to generate a constant potential gradient across the whole of the first ion guiding portion (see Fig 8). Alternatively, one or more transient DC voltages may be applied to the first electrodes to achieve the transfer of ions. |
