540,453. Pumps; screw fans. SULZER FRERES SOC. ANON. April 16, 1940, No. 6849. Convention date, April 21, 1939. [Class 7 (ii)] [Also in Group XXVI] Mechanism for the transmission of power from a reciprocating engine, e.g., an internal-combustion engine, to a rotary blower 2, Fig. 1, or other rotary apparatus comprises a torsionally elastic shaft 11 disposed within a hollow shaft 6, the shafts lying alongside the engine, and being supported at their connected ends by a bearing 9 mounted on the engine casing. The hollow shaft 6 may also be torsionally elastic. A gear-wheel 4 on the crank-shaft 3 of the engine meshes with a pinion 5 on the hollow shaft, and the inner shaft transmits the power through a friction coupling 12 to a gear 13 meshing with a pinion 14 on the shaft of the blower. The friction coupling comprises segments 16, Fig. 2, pressed outwards by springs against the interior of a drum 19 attached to the gear 13. The drum may be connected to the gear through a yielding coupling comprising springs 21 located between radial projections on the drum 19 and on an outer drum 23 fixed to the gear 13.
