540,906. Controlling apparatus for sounds. SHAW, W. Jan. 25, 1940, No. 1495. [Class 118 (ii)] Relates to means for controlling the direction of a moving body, such as a small aeroplane or torpedo, by the reception of sounds by microphones carried on the body. According to the invention, two microphones spaced apart actually control, through amplifiers el, e<SP>2</SP>, two motors c<SP>1</SP>, c<SP>2</SP> which operate an elevator f through differential gearing d, while another pair of microphones, spaced apart horizontally, similarly control a rudder. The controlling means may be used for directing automatically a projectile towards a target from which sounds emanate, or for automatically steering a torpedo towards a ship. The moving body may be guided during the first part of its travel by firing in the desired direction shells that make more noise in their flight than usual. |
