[Class 74 (ii)] A circular machine is provided with three needle beds and with means for shogging one or two of the needle beds with respect to the other beds or bed. Fabrics with plain, rib or purl stitch effects and transfer loop effects such as pelerine work or cable stitch work may be produced. Shogged welts also may be knitted. The needle beds may comprise two superposed cylinders 1, 2 and a dial 7, or two superposed cylinders 1, 2 and a second cylinder 107 arranged within the upper cylinder 2 and having swing-jack needles 106. Double-ended needles 3 are arranged to work in the opposed tricks of the cylinders 1, 2 and the tricks in the dial 7 or cylinder 107 are disposed between pairs of adjacent tricks in the cylinders 1, 2, Dial needles 6 are provided with patterning butts 6b operable by a cam 49 movable axially of the needle cylinders under control of a pattern drum 5. The swing- jack needles 106 have patterning butts 109 engaging pattern controlled levers 110. The dial needles may be actuated to cast off their loops without transference to adjacent cylinder needles, or may be deflected so that lower cylinder needles penetrate the loops thereon, so that the loops are transferred to adjacent wales. Patterning mechanism as described in Specification 475,288 may be provided for selecting the needle jacks 4 in the lower cylinder, and the shogging mechanism for the dial 7 or cylinder 107 may be as described in Specification 455,801. A fixed or yieldable latch opener may be provided for opening the latches of the dial needles. Some of the double-ended needles may be latchless at one end so that they can hold their loops when transferred from one cylinder to the other. The double-ended needles may be of the bearded or latch type. |
