A cooling apparatus / method of cooling comprises a fluid reservoir 130 for holding a fluid to be cooled and having a head region 130H and a body region 130B arranged below. A heat exchange portion in thermal communication with the fluid in the body region and a cooling object 140P cools the fluid in the head region. The fluid reservoir tapers whereby its cross sectional area decreases as a function of distance from the head region to the body region for at least a portion of the distance. The cooling object may be ice packs which may be cooled by a powered cooling element cooling (240CE, fig 5). The apparatus may be within a thermally insulated casing 110. A wall 130WU of the reservoir conducts heat from a payload compartment 120 containing objects (vaccine vials) to be cooled to the fluid in the reservoir. The cold store and payload compartments may be accessed by removable lids 120L, 140L. The fluid may be water and a wall 140W having a high thermal conductivity of the cold store compartment conducts heat and cools the water in the head region of the reservoir. The reservoir may taper continuously or as discrete steps. |
