摘要 The present invention discloses biocompatible, stable curcumin or its derivatives coated ultra-small super paramagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (USPION) for biomedical applications. Disclosed herein is also a simple one-pot process for the synthesis of biocompatible, stable curcumin or its derivatives coated ultra-small superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles in absence of a linker or binder. The curcumin or its derivatives coated ultra-small super paramagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles of the present invention retains the medicinal, radical scavenging and fluorescence properties of curcumin.

A one-pot process for the synthesis of curcumin coated magnetite nanoparticles, which are biocompatible, stable curcumin coated ultra-small super paramagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles devoid of a linker or binder, the process comprising: (a) dissolving aqueous mixture of FeCl3.6H2O and FeCl2.4H2O in the molar ratio ranging between 1.5:1 to 2:1 in a base under inert atmosphere and stirring until complete formation and growth of magnetite nanoparticles; (b) adding dilute mineral acid to the solution as obtained in step (a) until the solution has a pH of about 9; (c) adding drop wise curcumin solution dissolved in a base to the solution of step (b) under inert atmosphere, maintaining the pH at about 9 followed by stirring the dispersion at a temperature in the range of 50-100° C. followed by cooling; and (d) dialysing the dispersion of step (c) against water to remove excess curcumin and drying in a vacuum to obtain the product.
