Provided is a coated tool having excellent chipping and abrasion resistance even when a workpiece is cut under high-speed cutting conditions in which high heat is generated. A hard coating layer formed on the surface of the tool substrate comprises (a) a lower layer having an average layer thickness of 0.6-6.0μm, fulfilling the compositional formula (Al1-xTix)N (0.25 ≦̸ x ≦̸ 0.55), and having a Young's modulus E of 400GPa ≦̸ E ≦̸ 550GPa, and an upper layer which has a total average layer thickness of 0.5-5.0μm and comprises two or more periods of alternately laminated (b) and (c) layers: (b) an (Al,Cr)N layer having a single-layer average layer thickness of 0.1-1.0μm, fulfilling the compositional formula (Al1-yCry)N (0.25 ≦̸ y ≦̸ 0.50), and having a Young's modulus E which is 500GPa ≦̸ E ≦̸ 800GPa and is at least 100GPa different from the Young's modulus of the lower layer (c) a CrN layer having a single-layer average layer thickness of 0.1-1.0μm, wherein the average layer thickness of the lower layer is at least 1.2 times the total average layer thickness of the upper layer. |
