Convention date, Feb. 15, [Class 74 (ii)] A tubular ribbed fabric has one or more courses provided with an elastic thread E united to the fabric at spaced points ex in the course or courses and floated between these points across the inner faces of intervening inwardly extending ribs b<SP>2</SP>. The elastic thread E may be united with the ribbed fabric either at separated inwardly or outwardly extending wales, and may, as shown, be caught into the fabric without being knitted, or it may be knitted by itself or in plating relation to the body yarn B. The fabric may form a self-supporting rib top sock or stocking, which may have a welt formed as described in Specification 513,616. As described, the fabric is made upon a superposed cylinder machine having a transfer cam 1 operative upon all of the sliders S in the upper cylinder and draw cams 2, 3 in the lower cam cylinder to act upon the knitting butts S<SP>2</SP> and transfer butts S' of the lower sliders. The cam 3 is adjusted to a position in which it engages only sliders having long transfer butts so that the corresponding needles are drawn down so that they do not take the elastic thread, fed at position e. Selected sliders having short transfer butts are acted upon by the cam 2 and receive -the elastic thread. Riser cams 4, 5 are provided to act upon all the sliders, so that the elastic thread is brought below the latches of the selected needles. A transfer cam 8 serves to bring the sliders of the upper cylinder into engagement with the needles so that the rib body fabric is knitted at point b. A latch-opener is provided for opening the latches of the needles which have not taken the elastic yarn. |
