542,656. Starting. SWISS LOCOMOTIVE & MACHINE WORKS. March 4, 1940, No. 4049. Convention date, March 25, 1939. [Class 7 (v)] A beat valve 4 for admitting compressed air for starting is actuated by a cam 16 on the cam shaft 15 acting through a lever 10 and a relief piston 8 pressed away from the valve by a spring 22 and detachably connected to the stem of the valve. The piston 8 is acted upon by the air pressure to relieve the valve 4 of the air pressure and the relative axial movement possible between the piston 8 and the valve is preferably greater than the movement of the piston due to the cam 16. As shown, the piston 8 is assembled on the stem of the valve 4 by passing the T-shaped head 6 of the stem through a slot in the lower end of the piston and turning it through 90 degrees. The pivot 11 of the lever 10 is adjusted by a control lever 17 to put the valve in and out of action. In a modification, a T-shaped head on the piston is inserted in a slot in a hollow guide piston on the valve stem. |
